Central Goldfields Shire Recreation and Open Space Strategy

Central Goldfields Shire Council’s Recreation and Open Space Strategy 2020-2029 (ROSS) provides a clear vision and framework for participation in sport and recreation within the Central Goldfields Shire and will guide Council and community decision making for the next ten years.

Local sporting, recreation and community groups, key organisations and community members played a key role in development of the Strategy through extensive community consultations starting last year. The Draft ROSS was also made available for public comment during July 2020 which resulted in minor changes and overall positive feedback.

The ROSS has three key areas of focus which aim to make more people, more active, more often. The three main areas are:

  • Active places and spaces – making the best use of our tracks, trails and facilities
  • Active clubs, volunteers and recreation sector – partnerships between Council and local clubs and volunteers
  • Active community – increasing opportunities for people of all ages and all abilities to participate in healthy activities

Some of the key projects identified in the ROSS include:

  • Construction of a new Skate and Scooter Park in Princes Park
  • New multi-sport, rectangular fields complex in Maryborough
  • Development of a Princes Park Master Plan
  • Revision of the Walking and Cycling Strategy
  • Development of physically active communities
  • Development of leadership opportunities for young people and women

Central Goldfields Shire Walking and Cycling Strategy

The 2017 – 2026 Central Goldfields Shire Walking and Cycling Strategy(PDF, 3MB) provides a roadmap for increased cycling and walking opportunities within the municipality in the future.

The Central Goldfields Shire is perfectly placed to provide all the walking and cycling opportunities you could desire.

With the development of the Cycle Central Goldfields and Dunolly Cycle Maps, as well as the newly developed Ballarat - Maryborough Heritage Trail recreational cycling opportunities abound.

If walking is more your favoured form of physical activity there is also the Lake Victoria Walking Trail and Goldfields Reservoir Walking Trail, as well as ample opportunities through the neighbouring state parks.

Maryborough Municipal Olympic Complex Conservation Management Plan

In May 2018 Central Goldfields Shire Council endorsed the Draft Maryborough Municipal Olympic Complex Conservation Management Plan.(PDF, 11MB)

The Draft Plan, which was developed by a Heritage Victoria approved contractor, provides Council with a detailed assessment of the complex and recommendations for a staged plan for works that will ensure the restoration and conservation of the precinct in the future.

The Draft Plan outlines $1.765 million priority works which include maintenance works for the 50m pool, 25m pool, octagonal pool, entrance pavilion, concourses and plant room.

Other funding options are set to be explored by Council to cover comprehensive works, which are expected to cost $4.078 million.

Background information

Constructed in 1940 and listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, the precinct has and continues to play an integral role in the social fabric of our community.

Through Heritage Victoria’s Living Heritage Program, Central Goldfields Shire Council received a grant of $35,000. This enabled Council to prepare a Conversation Management Plan (CMP) and a Structural Condition Assessment (SCA) to guide essential conservation works at the Maryborough Municipal Olympic Swimming Complex.

Maryborough Major Sport and Recreation Reserves Master Plans

The Maryborough Major Sport and Recreation Reserves Master Plan Project will establish clear direction for the further development and management of three reserves – Princes Park, Jack Pascoe Reserve and J.H Hedges Oval.

In the 2021/22 Budget, Council allocated $60,000 for the Master Plans to be carried out, as part of the implementation of the Active Central Goldfields – Recreation and Open Space Strategy 2020-2029.

Council has appointed Otium Planning Group to lead the master plan process.
