Central Goldfields Shire has welcomed $150,095 in State Government funding for the lighting of Lake Victoria in Maryborough.

State Government Minister for Crime Prevention Natalie Hutchins announced $5.5 million in grants – with 31 community safety projects across 17 councils – to be funded as part of the $2.7 billion Building Works package.

The announcement follows Council’s grant application which was submitted in July 2020.

Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said Council was thrilled to see this major community safety project for the Central Goldfields community funded.

“Lake Victoria in Maryborough is one of the shire’s most frequented recreation precincts – with the surrounding track a popular location for running, walking and cycling for those of all ages.

“The existing lighting infrastructure is outdated and beyond repair and this funding will enable this to be replaced with modern energy efficient LED lighting as well as the installation of an additional 10 new lights within the area.

“Community safety and improvements to community assets were identified as important to our community as part of the community consultation we conducted through the development of the Active Central Goldfields Recreation and Open Space Strategy, Your Community 2020 Community Plan Project and  via the results we received from the Active Living Census.

“The project will also benefit local sporting groups who use the precinct for training purposes, residents who use the track to walk into the Maryborough shopping precinct and it will also be of major benefit for events including the Energy Breakthrough, Highland Gathering and Relay for Life."

The project will be delivered within the 2020/2021 financial year.
