Energy Breakthrough communications upgrade contract awarded

Works to upgrade the information technology and communications infrastructure at the award-winning Energy Breakthrough event, has moved a step closer this week.

At a Meeting of Council this week (25/05), Central Goldfields Shire Council awarded the $789,373 Communications Upgrade works package to local business Troy Walker Electrical Pty Ltd, following a public tender process.

The package of works has been made possible thanks to $1.5 million from the Victorian Government (announced in May, 2020) which will fund a range of enhancement works for the event.

Central Goldfields Shire Flynn Ward Councillor and Energy Breakthrough Committee Chairperson Liesbeth Long said the IT and communications infrastructure upgrade is critical to the successful delivery of the Energy Breakthrough event.

“Much work has been done behind the scenes to ensure the future growth of this award-winning event and the establishment of permanent infrastructure is key to this.

“IT makes much of the event possible – registrations, staff management, electronic lap timing, event and emergency operations as well as general internet access for the staff and volunteers of the event. 

“Previously, this infrastructure has been bumped in and out each year, which is costly and seeing much of the equipment reach end of life.

“It’s exciting that this part of the enhancement works can now get underway in time for this year’s event and better still it’s fabulous to know that the Victorian Government investment is going directly back into our community with Troy Walker Electrical locally based.”

The Energy Breakthrough Infrastructure Project includes other enhancements to the festival site, racing conditions and the visitor experience including:

  • Expanded scope and technology focus through improvements to the scale and quality of expo site and judging facilities
  • Enhanced spectator experience through creating improved pedestrian access, vantage points and displays across the entirety of the track
  • Improved camping facilities through increased coverage and capacity of electricity and running water across the camping grounds 
  • Improved safety across the site including track improvements, increased lighting, more access points for emergency vehicles and comprehensive post-COVID-19 health and safety adjustments
  • Phase 2 of the work will broaden the reach of the festival, attracting new start-ups and established technology and utilities companies to create a world-class future-skills focused STEM Expo as part of the annual festival. 

The full program of works is expected to be delivered by November, 2022.
