This Friday, 8 March, is International Women’s day.  It’s a day that is celebrated in many countries around the world, a day when we recognise the achievements of women through out the community and their right to participate fully in every facet of community life.

International Women’s day recognises, reinforces and champions the importance of equality for women throughout the world – and how everyone, regardless of gender, has a role to play in championing equality in our community.

International Women’s day is an opportunity for us all to reflect on our progress in advancing gender equality.  At Central Goldfields Shire we pride ourselves on being an equal-opportunity employer that employs and recognises staff at every level of our organisation, regardless of gender.

In our wider community – it is encouraging to see how many of our great community, service and sporting clubs have recognised the need for gender equality and encourage women to take leadership roles.

International Women’s day is an opportunity for you to celebrate the achievements of women in your community, but also to reflect on the challenges that remain before we can confidently say that women have opportunities equal with men to reach their potential.

We all have a role to play – regardless of gender, to stand up when we see something not right, to call out disparity and to encourage everyone to strive to do and be their best.  I encourage all men to have a conversation this week within your own family about the experience of women in your life and what you could do in response.

Don’t wait until Friday to celebrate women and their achievements at home, in the community, or in the workplace– we should be celebrating them every day.

Do it today.
